KOCHI: Four crew members of a 35-feet fibreglass boat Dolphin, belonging to Bangaram Island tourist resort, were rescued by the Coast Guard vessel Annie Besant here on the midnight of May 8. The vessel in distress was about 100 km off the coast with an engine failure and was adrift for about 12 hours before it was rescued, said a statement from the Coast Guard here on Tuesday.
Distress signal
The distress signal was picked up by a merchant vessel transiting through the area, which, it conveyed to the Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre here. The Maritime Rescue Coordinating Centre in Mumbai swung into action and diverted Annie Besant for the rescue operation.
Aircraft kept ready
A Dornier aircraft and a helicopter were kept ready in Kochi for any emergency as the boat in distress was towed away to Beypore after the crew in distress was provided with necessary assistance.
Rescue work
The rescue operation was coordinated by the Commander of Coast Guard, Region (West), Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, Mumbai, said the Coast Guard statement. It also said that the Coast Guard had stepped up vigil on the coast with the holiday season at its peak and tourist movement between the Lakshwadeep Islands and Kerala rising.
