10 p.c. wage hike for coir workers

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: : The indefinite strike in the coir industry has been called off following an agreement between the coir workers and managements for a 10 per cent wage hike in the industry. The strike was called off after a conciliation meeting at the Labour Minister, Babu Divakaran's chamber during the wee hours of Tuesday.

The meeting also decided to leave the question of paying wage arrears to the workers to the industrial relations committee, to retain the depot system and end the contract system in the industry. The meeting deferred a decision on the assistance due to coir societies to the meeting scheduled for June 10 and authorised three officials of the Labour Department to look into grievances of coir workers.

The second round of discussions was held after the first round involving representatives of the workers, the management and the Government failed to arrive at a decision on the outstanding issues.
