Notification for bypolls issued

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The notification for the byelections to be held to the Assembly from the Azhikode and Koothuparamba constituencies has been issued. The filing of nominations will continue till May 16. The scrutiny will take place the next day. May 19 is the last day for withdrawing nominations. The polling will take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on June 2. — Special Correspondent

Returns filing: date extended

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has extended by 10 days the filing of the monthly returns for May under the Value Added Tax (VAT) regime. An official press note said here on Tuesday that those with an annual tax commitment of Rs.10 lakhs or more need file the returns only by May 20 and the others by May 25. The note added that the tax should however be remitted on time. — Special Correspondent

No change in Alapad polls: SEC

KOLLAM: The State Election Commissioner (SEC), N. Mohandas, has said that elections to the tsunami devastated Alapad grama panchayat will be held along with the elections to the local bodies in the State scheduled for September. The announcement comes in the wake of speculation that elections to the Alapad grama panchayat committee were likely to be postponed. Mr. Mohandas made the announcement after talking to all concerned when he made a formal visit to Alapad on Tuesday. He said that the issue over the voters' list for Alapad would be solved by preparing the list accordingly. All those rehabilitated in the temporary shelters would be included in the list. — Staff Reporter

Technical journal launched

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Welbound Times, technical journal addressing the book printing and manufacturing industry, was launched on Monday. The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, handed over the first copy to A. Charles, MP. The publication is aimed at book printers, binders and exercise notebook manufacturers. — Staff Reporter

Medha to join anti-Coke stir

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Social activist Medha Padkar will lead a sathyagraha in front of the Secretariat on May 17, demanding the closure of the bottling plants of the Coca-Cola and the Pepsi in Palakkad district. The action is being organised by the National Alliance of People's Movements (NAPM). Several leading social and environmental activists will participate in the sathyagraha, T. Peter, State convener of the NAPM, said. — Special Correspondent

Directive on Ordinance

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday permitted the Kerala Government to place on record the Kovalam Palace (Taking Over by Resumption) Ordinance promulgated on Monday in the special leave petition filed by the State against a Kerala High Court order quashing the earlier takeover of the M-Far Hotels. A three-Judge Bench comprising Justice S.N. Variava, Justice A.R. Lakshmanan and Justice S.H. Kapadia gave this permission after senior counsel for the State, P.P. Rao, mentioned to the court about promulgation of the Ordinance. — Special Correspondent

Fruit festival

KOZHIKODE: The Kozhikode Agri-Horticultural Society in association with the Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council (VFPC), Kerala, will conduct a fruit, vegetable and mango festival at the Gandhi Park, Cherooty Road here, from May 13 to 16.

The horticulture society president and District Collector, Rachna Shah, will inaugurate the exhibition.

The chief executive, VFPC, Ashokumar Thekkan, will be the chief guest on the occasion.

Senior artistes honoured

KOZHIKODE: Calicut School of Fine Arts honoured senior artistes at a function at the Lalithakala Akademi Art Gallery here on Tuesday.

The nine artists honoured on the occasion were Achyuthan, former art teacher at Ganapath School, Chalappuram; Sankaran, Karaparambu, former teacher and make-up artist; Sreedharan, former art teacher, Kunduparambu; Janardhanan Kottempram, former art teacher, Central School, East Hill; U.K. Raghavan, former teacher, Pookkad Kalalayam; J.R. Prasad, chief artist, Mathrubhumi; Rajan Makkada, former art teacher; Mohanan, Balussery, and P. Krishnankutty. — Staff Reporter

Devaswom Bill

KOZHIKODE: The Malabar Devaswom Staff Union will approach the Supreme Court for a directive on the delay experienced in not passing the Malabar Devaswom Bill.

The general secretary, district committee, Malabar Devaswom, Staff Union, V.V.Sreenivasan said, the step to approach the Apex Court has been necessitated as the Malabar Devaswom bill which was presented in the Assembly on December 3, 2001 as directed by the Kerala High Court, was yet to become law after more than three years.
