CUDDAPAH: The CPI(Maoist) is luring village youths, sending them to forests with weapons and using them as mercenaries to kill policemen and innocent persons, besides extorting money from businessmen and politicians, according to the Cuddapah SP, V.C. Sajjanar. Though Maoists claim to be working for the downtrodden and oppressed sections, they were working against people's interests and, hence, should introspect their goal behind mindless killings, violence and destruction of public and private properties, he said at a press conference here on Tuesday. The leeway given by the Government was misused for recruiting boys and girls, and spreading terror, he alleged and warned of stern action against people extending cooperation to Maoists. "Have they ever built houses for the poor, extended compensation or financial assistance to bereaved families of slain extremists," the Additional SP, M. Lakshmi Reddy, sought to know. Maoist leaders reside in major cities, but send boys and girls to commit offences and most of them were ignorant of Maoism or Leninism despite working in the outfit for a few years, the Additional SP said, citing the example of N. Hanumanthu Reddy, who was arrested in Rayachoti recently. Urging Maoists to shun weapons and surrender, the SP alleged that they were bent upon retaining weapons for terrorising people and extorting money.
