HYDERABAD: The month-long statewide Praja Patham programme, launched by the Congress Government to take the administration to people, came to a close on Tuesday amidst claims of "a grand success in terms of the areas covered, works taken up and problems solved, all without any publicity." The Ministers for Agriculture and Mines -- N. Raghuveera Reddy, and N. Sabitha Indra Reddy -- reeled out figures in support of the claims at a press conference here while the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, wound up his trips by undertaking the one on the last day in the Srikakulam area.
Summer issues
The Ministers said the Government and people were "highly satisfied" that the programme could focus on three summer issues -- drinking water, gainful employment and power supply, and that on-the-spot solutions were provided by the elected representatives "who were sent out with powers and funds for the first time." Ms. Sabitha said the response from women was particularly overwhelming, and the reaction from them was one of appreciation for the Government initiatives. Mr. Reddy said 95 per cent of the 26,156 gram panchayats/ municipal wards in the State were covered till Monday. In all, 8,836 drinking water works worth Rs. 155 crores were sanctioned/grounded. As a follow-up of the Praja Patham, review meetings would be held at the mandal level on Wednesday to assesss the gains and at the district level on Thursday culminating in a public meeting in the State capital on Saturday participated by the Chief Minister.
