Landmines unearthed

VISAKHAPATNAM: The special search party of the police unearthed two landmines, each weighing around 2.5 kg, four detonators and a wire bundle at Etharobba village in G.K. Veedhi mandal on Tuesday. According to the Superintendent of Police (Vizag Rural), Sanjay Kumar Jain, the search operation was conducted in view of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's visit to the district. . - Staff Reporter

Tatkal scheme for Inter exam fee

HYDERABAD: The Tatkal scheme of the Board of Intermediate Education will be kept open from May 11 to 14 for the benefit of students who have not paid fee for the advanced supplementary examination May/June 2005 even though the last date is over. A special fee of Rs. 1,000 in addition to the prescribed amount is to be paid under the scheme through a DD drawn in favour of the board Secretary. Students willing to take attendance exemption and appear under the arts combination should submit application forms along with exemption fee of Rs. 500 at the board's office. This will be in addition to the Tatkal fee and examination fee, according to a press release. - Staff Reporter

Volleyball player, 2 others killed in mishap

ELURU: A State-level volleyball player, P. Dali Babu (20) of Akiveedu, and two others were killed in a road accident near Undi in West Godavari district on Monday night. Dali Babu took part in volleyball tournaments held in Vijayawada, Guntur and Hyderabad. The trio was crushed to death when the motorcycle on which they were returning home after watching a movie rammed a lorry. - Staff Reporter

Papaghni dalam member arrested

CUDDAPAH: A CPI(Maoist) Papaghni dalam member, Nallapagani Hanumanthu Reddy (19), involved in an attack on Venkatamanna Halli armed police outpost in Tumkur district of Karnataka, wherein eight policemen and a civilian were killed and 10 SLRs snatched away, was arrested in Rayachoti town. Hanumantha Reddy alias Shyam, a school drop-out, joined the party a year ago, V.C. Sajjanar, SP, told newsmen on Tuesday. - Staff Reporter

Farmer ends life

Kakinada: A small farmer, Pampana Adinarayana (52) of Pyna village in Pedapudi mandal, committed suicide owing to heavy debts by consuming a pesticide in the village fields on Monday night, according to the Pedapudi police. - Correspondent

Life term for two

ADILABAD: The Second Additional Sessions Judge, K.V. Vijaya Kumar, on Tuesday sentenced Oruganti Shankar (28) and Barimolla Ramesh (32), both of Mudhole, to life term and fined Rs. 6,000 each for killing their friend, Kandala Naganna, on February 9, 2003. The two had beaten Naganna to death and threw his body in Kotha cheruvu after stealing his money of Rs. 10,000. - Staff Reporter

11 DSPs transferred

HYDERABAD: The Government on Tuesday transferred 11 DSPs and gave new postings to them. Details of the transferred officers with new postings are as follows: S. Saibaba (Chirala, Prakasam), T. Narasimha Raju (Sircilla, Karimnagar) and S. Krishna Prasad (Crime Investigation Department).

HYDERABAD: The Government on Tuesday appointed M.K. Rehman, Chief Engineer, Sriramsagar Stage II, as Engineer-in-Chief, Major Irrigation, relieving B.V. S. Prakasa Rao, of this post. Houses sanctioned for tsunami hit

NELLORE : The Government has sanctioned 233 permanent houses for fishermen who faced the wrath of tsunami in Vakadu mandal in December last. While Srinivasapuram will have 83 houses, Toopilipalem will have 60 houses. Each house is expected to cost Rs. 40,000. - Staff Reporter

PR teachers picket DEO office

KURNOOL: Panchayat Raj teachers picketed the office of the District Education Officer (DEO), Hemanalini, here on Tuesday demanding payment of salaries through treasury account. The leaders said the DEO was apathetic to their problem and had been rude to the representatives of the union. Hemanalini said the issue would be discussed with higher-ups. - Staff Reporter

House burgled

NELLORE: Unidentified culprits who gained access into a house in Polireddipalem village of D.V. Satram mandal, on Monday night, took away ornaments and Rs. 10,000 in cash. According to the complaint lodged by the police, the incident took place when the inmates went to a nearby village, after locking the house. - Staff Reporter

Three fire mishaps

NELLORE: Property worth Rs. One lakh has been destroyed in three fire mishaps in different parts of the district. A thatched house in Mannemala village of Chittamuru mandal was gutted causing a loss of about Rs. 20,000. In Chemudugunta village of Venkatachalam mandal, a thatched house was gutted due to spillage of oil from a lamp, causing loss of more than Rs. 50,000. In Madapalli village of Chejerla mandal, haystacks, which were being transported in a tractor, were gutted when they came in contact with live wires. Fire department personnel were rushed from Podalakur to contain the fire. - Staff Reporter

Para-medical staff protest

CUDDAPAH: The Contractual Para-medical Employees Association members staged a black-badge demonstration before the Collectorate on Tuesday decrying yesterday's lathicharge on their protesting counterparts in Hyderabad. The Government recently announced regularisation of para-medical employees, but subsequently issued a G.O. to the contrary, the association district president, Prakash and secretary, Shahjahan, alleged. They warned of intensifying their stir if the employees' services were not regularised. - Staff Reporter

Panchayat Raj Minister for Nellore today

NELLORE: The Panchayat Raj Minister, J.C. Diwakar Reddy, will arrive at Nellore on Wednesday, on a one-long visit. According to the official programme, the Minister will participate in various programmes arranged in Rapur Assembly constituency.

Protest against land for ex-militant

NIZAMABAD: Residents of Brahmanpally in Jakranpally mandal staged a dharna here on Monday, protesting against the allotment of land measuring about 2.20 acres to an ex-militant, Katike Ravilal, belonging to the neighbouring village of Torlikonda. The villagers, including a large number of women, under the leadership of the former Mandal Praja Parishad president, Sarada, met the Collector, D.V. Raidu and submitted a memorandum urging him to cancel the allotment. - Staff Reporter

Dharna against State policies

ADILABAD: The Adilabad unit of the Women Development and Child Welfare Department employees association will participate in a dharna on May 13, in front of the State secretariat, to protest against the State Government's anti-employee policies. The association president, G. Mahesh, executive committee member Leela and treasurer Narender alleged that the Government was retrenching employees in the name of reorganisation. Ex gratia paid

ADILABAD: The Adilabad Superintendent of Police, Kripanand Tripathi Ujela, on Tuesday handed over a cheque for Rs. 5 lakhs as ex gratia to the widow of P. Lingaiah of Bopparam village in Kotapalli mandal who was killed by Maoists in January this year. He also handed over a cheque for Rs. 2 lakhs to P. Mallesh alias Prakash, a CO of the Sironcha Dalam of Pratighatana group. The naxalite carried a reward of Rs. 2 lakhs on his head when he surrendered before the DGP at Hyderabad on June 6, 2004. - Staff Reporter

One killed in mishap; body found

Sangareddy: Driver of a van was killed on Tuesday when a truck coming in the opposite direction hit his vehicle near Imbrahimnagar under the Chinnakoduru police station limits. The van was going to Karimnagar from Hyderabad. In another incident, body of unknown person was found on the outskirts of Japtisivnur, near Ramayampet. The body bore injuries caused by sharp weapon.
