NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday questioned Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati in a disproportionate assets case registered two years ago. Officials of its anti-corruption unit questioned Ms. Mayawati at her house here for about an hour. She was asked to explain "acquisition of property in her name and in the names of her family members," said CBI sources. The CBI had registered two cases the Rs. 175-crore Taj corridor scam and the disproportionate assets case. In 2003, it conducted raids in Delhi and several places in Uttar Pradesh after filing the first information report under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
"Purchase of property"
The searches revealed documents on purchase of property in Delhi and parts of Uttar Pradesh between April 1, 1995 and August 29, 2003. Ms. Mayawati resigned as Chief Minister on August 27, 2003. According to the FIR, she had several bank accounts in Delhi, a plot in Lucknow, agricultural land in Uttar Pradesh and several fixed deposits. The scrutiny of the bank accounts of her relatives revealed substantial sums, which the CBI suspected were beyond their legitimate means of livelihood.
