Jayalalithaa should cooperate with special court: BJP

Special Correspondent

`She had said course of law should not be obstructed'

CHENNAI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Bandaru Dattatreya has urged Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to cooperate with the Special Court in Bangalore in expediting the wealth case against her.

The Chief Minister, in the Sankaraman murder case in which the Kanchi Acharya was one of the accused, had said that the course of law should not be obstructed.

But now she herself was trying to delay the process of trial against her in the wealth case on flimsy grounds. If she was really innocent and had respect for the judiciary, she should help the special court in going ahead with the trial without any interruption, he said talking to reporters here on Tuesday.

The BJP leader also that the quashing of the State Government's order on detaining Sundaresa Iyer and others under the Goondas Act showed that the cases against the Acharyas were fabricated. The Government should withdraw the cases against them.

`Lalu should quit'

Demanding the resignation of Railway Minister Lalu Prasad for his remarks against the Election Commissioners, Mr. Dattatreya said Mr. Prasad lowered the dignity of a Union Minister. The Prime Minister should remove him from the Cabinet.

He charged that Mr. Lalu's remarks against Constitutional bodies such as the Election Commission was an attempt to divert the people's attention from his defeat in the recent Bihar election.

`Mandala yatra'

The BJP secretary said the State unit would take up programmes to strengthen the party at the grass roots. District-level working committee meetings would be conducted from May 15 to 31.

From June 1 to 30, the party would organise "mandala yatra" in which 10 State-level leaders would tour 1,204 mandals in the State to enrol new members, especially in rural areas, and identify local issues for future agitation programmes.

There was enthusiasm among the youth in the State to join the BJP and the party wanted to capitalise on it.

There was no change in the party's decision to stand on its own legs in the State and any decision on electoral alliance would be considered only at the time of general elections, he added.
