Old man found dead

TIRUCHI: : A 65-year-old man was found dead in a mango orchard at Koongur Manmedu near Lalgudi on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Krishnamoorthy, who had worked as a watchman at the orchard.

Police sources said cut injuries were found on the neck of the deceased.

Cyclist fatally

knocked down

A cyclist was fatally knocked down by a lorry on the Chennai Bypass Road near Viralimalai Road junction here on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Karthik (22) of K.K. Nagar. The lorry driver Ramakrishnan was arrested.

The Traffic Investigation (south) Wing has registered a case.

Old woman arrested

A 55-year-old woman, who allegedly snatched a gold chain from a woman, was arrested on Monday.

The incident occurred near Garuda Mandapam in Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam.

Police sources said Pitchaiyammal snatched a two-sovereign gold chain from the sister of a retired tahsildar.

She was caught redhanded and the chain recovered. The accused is a local ex-convict, said the Srirangam police.

`Take action on ration card issue'

The Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam has urged the Chief Minister to pay special attention to the ration card issue and take appropriate action to ensure that people get ration cards on time.

In a press release, its district president S.T. Rajendran said only 65 per cent of those who applied for new ration cards last June had obtained the cards.

Those who filed an appeal at the respective tahsildar offices have not received any information till date.

Pensioners' plea for concession in buses

The Tiruchi District Pensioners' Association has urged the state government to provide a 50 per cent fare concession for pensioners in government buses.

A resolution to this effect was adopted at the association's general council meeting held recently.

Various resolutions were adopted during the meeting which was presided over by the association president K. Palaniandi, a release issued here said.

Mettur level

The level in the Mettur dam stood at 52.79 feet today.

The inflow was 1,044 cusecs and the discharge 870 cusecs.
