Parties get into poll mode in Dakshina Kannada

Staff Correspondent

Zilla, taluk panchayat election notification likely any time

  • New list of constituencies in great demand
  • Four new seats added in Dakshina Kannada ZP
  • Congress claims `excellent track record'
  • BJP confident of good show

MANGALORE: With the notification on taluk and zilla panchayat elections expected any time, Dakshina Kannada has slipped into election mode. The Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Janata Dal (Secular) are getting their act together.

The election wing at the Deputy Commissioner's office here is abuzz with everyone who matters in politics calling up to know if there has been any notification about the panchayat elections along with the byelections to the Legislative Assembly and Lok Sabha from Chamarajpet and Shimoga respectively.

The parties are busy procuring copies of new list of constituencies for taluk and zilla panchayat elections in the district. The composition of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, which has four more constituencies, has undergone changes in Mangalore, Belthangady, Puttur and Sullia taluks.

According to the special issue of the Karnataka Gazzette of April 25, 2005, the new constituencies are Kateel in Mangalore taluk. Kurnadu in Buntwal taluk, Nelyadi in Puttur taluk and Aranthodu in Sullia taluk. The only Taluk that does not have any changes is Belthangady.

Another newly-created constituency is Kurnadu in Buntwal taluk.

It has Fajeer, Cheluru, Balepuni, Ira, Sajipapadu, Naringana and Kairangala, which are backward areas where tribal people, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and backward classes are predominant.

Nelyadi is the last constituency in Dakshina Kannada, which is in Puttur taluk and has a substantial BJP support here. Apart from Nelyadi, it has Golithottu, Konalu, Alanthaya, Alankaru, Perabe, Kaukradi, Ichalampadi, Kunthoor, Ramakunja, Haleneranki and Koila. It is not certain which parties have an edge as the BJP and the Congress claim to have made inroads.

Ananthodu is the new seat created in Sullia. It has jurisdiction up to Sampaje, which is the Dakshina Kannada border with Kodagu. Aranthodu has Thodikana, Aletti, Nellurkemraje, Ubaradka, Mitturu, Markanja and Sampaje. Here the BJP and Congress claim to be strong.
