VISAKHAPATNAM: A tense situation prevailed for some time at the public meeting addressed by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, at the TB Hospital junction on Tuesday, when some CPI workers tried to disrupt the meeting. The CPI activists gathered at the venue and waited patiently for the arrival of the Chief Minister, who was delayed by about one-and-half hours. As soon as the Visakha-II MLA, S. Ranga Raju, began listing the achievements of the Congress and of Dr. Reddy, the CPI activists raised a banner seeking the withdrawal of the allotment of the hospital land to a private company. They started shouting slogans and National Students Union of India activists, who were sitting close to them, raised slogans in support of Dr. Reddy. The CPI workers raised their voice as the Chief Minister started addressing the gathering. Some NSUI leaders went a step ahead and tried to pull the banners from the hands of women CPI workers. Police arrested the agitating CPI workers including women drawing the agitation to a close.
CITU hits back
Workers of the CITU retaliated when a few Congress workers behaved in a highhanded manner just before the Chief Minister laid the stone for a mega housing complex at Paradesipalem on city outskirts. The CITU workers came to the venue carrying their party flags to submit a memorandum to Dr. Reddy on local problems. But some Congressmen snatched their party flags and tore them up, the CITU men alleged. They strongly retaliated and after a minor scuffle, the police separated the two groups. The Pendurthy MLA, T. Gurumurthy Reddy, pacified the angry CITU workers. The incident happened in front of the open space between the plaque (which was unveiled by the Chief Minister) and the press enclosure.
