TAMBARAM: The residents of Jothi Nagar in West Tambaram woke up on Tuesday morning to an unbearable stench — the stench of sewage overflowing and stagnating in front of their houses.

The stagnation was caused by sewage overflow from storm water drains on either side of the Mudichur Road. The drains, built by the Tambaram Municipality for discharging rainwater, are being used to discharge raw sewage from houses, commercial complexes, restaurants and markets. The sewage empties into the Paapaan Canal.

. On Monday a concrete structure was built near the discharge point at the Paapaan Canal. As the sewage from the drains did not have an outlet, it entered Jothi Nagar, causing inconvenience to residents.

Perungalathur Panchayat officials, however, clarified they had not built the structure at the canal. They said the Madras High Court had directed the Tambaram Municipality against discharging sewage into the Paapaan Canal, as it was built to prevent inundation of the low-lying residential areas at Perunkulathur during the monsoon.

The direction was given following a petition filed by the Perunkulathur residents' welfare associations that the discharge of raw sewage was posing a health hazard.

Though the Municipality complied by prevented the sewage flow into the canal, the problem started again a few months ago. Municipality officials inspected the spot where the concrete structure was built and assured Jothi Nagar residents that remedial measures would be taken up.

Residents of Tambaram said such problems could be avoided if the underground drainage project is implemented in the Municipality.
