CHENNAI: A controversy has broken out over the removal of the Jawaharlal Nehru statue at Kathipara junction, the southern gateway of the metropolis.

While a section of residents say the statue was removed without notice by the National Highways, a department under the charge of the Union Ministry for Highways and DMK leader T.R. Baalu, Union Minister, says the statue has been temporarily removed as it lay in the alignment of the proposed grade separator at the junction.

Make-shift platform

Mr. Baalu said the statue was removed only after discussion with Congress leaders including the TNCC president, G.K. Vasan. "Everyone is aware of the issue. Only with the consent of the leaders, a separate make-shift platform is being created in another part of the junction. The statue will be installed there within a week or 10 days," Mr. Baalu told The Hindu .

He added that once the grade separator work was complete, the statue would be re-installed in the centre of the junction, but on a slightly raised pedestal "so that the total height of the structure will be much more than it is now. We will ensure that the landmark remains visible and its view is not obstructed."

Referring the criticism that the statue was removed only to install a statue of late Murasoli Maran, Mr. Baalu said the fate of the Kannagi statue [which was removed from its pedestal on the Marina after a traffic accident] would not befall the Nehru statue. "We welcome suggestions for installing Murasoli Maran's statue which we will do at an appropriate place at an appropriate time," he added.
