THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Nearly a lakh headload workers laid siege to the State Secretariat on Tuesday morning demanding that the Government rollback the new loading and unloading policy announced in 2002. Inaugurating the dharna, the CITU general secretary, P.K. Gurudasan, said the powers given to the police for interfering in loading and unloading labour disputes should be withdrawn. The dharna that started at 6 a.m. ended at around 2 p.m. The workers blocked all the gates of the Secretariat. Headload workers belonging to the CITU, AITUC, BMS, STU and UTUC participated in the demonstration. With M.G. Road getting blocked, traffic in the city was thrown out of gear for several hours.
