Dismissed cop killed in encounter

Allegedly involved in 30 cases of murder and extortion

NEW DELHI: : A dismissed Delhi police constable, who was allegedly involved in 30 cases of murder, extortion, contract killing and car jacking, was killed in an encounter with the Special Cell of Delhi police in the parking of Kalindi Kunj in South Delhi on Tuesday evening.

The Joint Commissioner of Police, Karnal Singh, said the wanted criminal Ranbir Rath had joined the Delhi police in 1991 and had got involved in criminal activities in 1999. In 2001 he was dismissed from the force. Thereafter he had got involved in various crimes and in the most recent incident had demanded Rs 10 lakhs in extortion from a East Delhi businessman.

The case was being investigated by the Special Cell of Delhi police and on Tuesday morning two associates of Ranbir - Karamvir and Singh Raj - were arrested by the Special Cell. Their questioning revealed that Ranbir was to meet them at Kalindi Kunj parking at around 7-30 p.m..

Thereafter a team was constituted under Assistant commissioner of Police, Rajbir Singh, who along with Inspector Lalit Mohan Negi and Inspector H. Bhushan, laid a trap for the accused at the meeting point. At around 7-30 p.m., Ranbir reached the spot in a Santro car which had been robbed from Faridabad 15 days ago.

While he was standing outside the car and waiting for his associates, the police team challenged him and asked him to surrender. At this Ranbir allegedly pulled out a weapon and began firing at the police while trying to flee from the spot. The police returned the fire and Ranbir was grievously injured. He was taken to All India Institute of medical Sciences where he was declared brought dead.

Mr Singh said Ranbir was a resident of Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh and was accused in 22 cases of U.P. and eight in Delhi. In 2004 he had killed a man, Subhash, and his partner in Loni, and was also involved in an encounter with the Loni police, in which he had managed to flee leaving his sten gun behind.

The accused was also wanted in a contract killing of Kirthal village in which he had allegedly taken Rs 5 lakh from a party and had thereafter killed four persons.
