`Barricades helped nab 20 criminals'

Staff Reporter

8,000 vehicles were stopped, says top official

BANGALORE: Admitting that robberies have increased in the past two months, the Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), M.C. Narayanagowda, said on Tuesday that the police had nabbed 20 "criminals" in counter operations that included night barricades on roads.

However, addressing presspersons here, he said the number of cases registered has come down in the period. "The police have studied the robbery cases in details and discussed them at length. Erecting barricades on roads is one of the measures to combat such crimes," he said.

Mr. Narayanagowda said barricades were erected at "10 places in bigger police station limits and at five places in smaller police station limits." "We checked about 8,000 vehicles. Although it caused some inconvenience to the public, we were able to catch 20 criminals," he informed.

More personnel

He said the Government may consider a request from the Police Department to strengthen the city police by an additional 5,000 personnel immediately. The city, which has 85 lakh residents and a floating population of about 15 lakhs, required a proportionate increase in the strength of its police force, he added.

To a question on whether live-band artistes are coming to Bangalore from Maharashtra, Mr. Narayanagowda said there are no such reports.
