BANGALORE: Elizabeth (45), a maid, suffered burns on her face and body in an acid attack on Monday. The police said she was attacked in Sadashivanagar allegedly by an acquaintance, Mehboob Pasha (30) of Koramangala. Elizabeth, who was working as a domestic help in a house in Sadashivanagar, was returning home when Pasha accosted her. He reportedly demanded that she repay the Rs. 8,000 she had borrowed from him. He allegedly started making advances towards her, and when she rejected them, he threw acid on her. The Sadashivanagar police arrested Pasha. A native of Ranchi district of Jharkhand, he was an employee of a garage in Koramangala. The police have seized an acid can from him. Elizabeth, a resident of Ejipura in Viveknagar, has been admitted to hospital. The police said that earlier, Elizabeth worked in an eye hospital where Pasha was employed as an ambulance driver. Pasha had been demanding the money back and was asking her to go out with him, Elizabeth told the police.
Held on theft charges
A 60-year-old man who allegedly stole goods from 255 houses in the city was arrested by the Ramamurthynagar police on Monday. The accused, Mani, alias Escape Mani, was arrested when he was allegedly planning to burgle a house in Ramamurthynagar, the police said. In March, Mani is alleged to have broken into a house in Raghavendranagar and taken away gold jewellery, cameras and mobile phones, valued at about Rs. 60,000 in all. Last month, the accused allegedly broke into a house and took away gold ornaments worth about Rs. 1 lakh, the police said. The jewellery was recovered. According to the police, Mani was involved in 253 other burglary cases reported from the Mahalakshmi Layout, Jayanagar, Banashankari, Magadi Road, Vijayanagar, Rajajinagar and Nandini Layout police station limits in the city, KGF, Tumkur district, and Andhra Pradesh. He was released from prison last March, the police said.
Murder accused held
Two more persons have been arrested in connection with the murder of Bekkinkan Rajendra in the city a few months ago. The accused, Vijay Kumar and Rohit, were arrested in Jolarpet in Tamil Nadu. Two others accused in the case are at large. The Ramamurthynagar police on Tuesday arrested three persons for their alleged involvement in the murder of Bhoopathikumar (38), a financier, who was bludgeoned to death at his house in Gurumurthy Reddy Layout on April 30. The names of the accused were given as Manjunath (26) of K.R. Nagar, Mysore; Mallesh alias Mallesh Gowda (25) of Hamaru village, Dharwad; and Raghavendra alias Raghu (20) of Kundapura taluk, Udupi district.
Women rescued from gang
A live-band artiste, Poonam Singh (26), who was kidnapped by a four-member gang on M.G. Road on Monday night, has been rescued by the police. Poonam Singh had reportedly hired an autorickshaw to return home when the gang accosted her and took her away in a car, the police said.
Man robbed
A carpenter, Babu, was attacked with an iron rod and robbed of Rs. 1,500 in cash and a mobile phone by a four-member gang in the K.G. Halli police station limits on Monday night. Babu, of Bharathmatha Layout, was returning home around 8 p.m. when the culprits waylaid him near the Lingarajapuram railway track.
