BANGALORE: "Akshaya Tritiya," one of the of the most auspicious days of the year ideal for launching any new venture or making a purchase, has come to be seen as an occasion for buying gold.

"Gold has become synonymous with Akshaya Tritiya (which falls on Wednesday) mainly because of the media's role in promoting it," M. Goutham Chand, managing director, Navrathan Jewellers, says. In the past three years, an increase of 15 per cent in gold sales has been recorded around Akshaya Tritiya.

Jewellers are witnessing an unprecedented rush of buyers. "There are takers for all kinds of jewellery, including silver and diamonds ornaments with small quantities of gold," Sajjan Raj, Sri Krishna Diamonds and Jewellery, says.

Jewellers have found it is necessary to prepare for the festival well in advance. They have increased their stocks of gold jewellery by 40 per cent, introduced new varieties and designs and engaged more salespersons at their stores. Special offers and discounts have been introduced. Stores are to remain open till late at night on Wednesday. Buyers were encouraged to book their purchase in advance to avoid the rush at the stores on Akshaya Tritiya, Mohammed Akbar, floor manager, C. Krishnaiah Chetty and Sons, said.

Tanishq has opened its third showroom to mark the auspicious day, and Sri Krishna Diamonds and Jewellery has expanded to a new floor. Navrathan Jewellers will distribute "prasad" to all customers on this day.
