Three arrested on charge of cheating job applicants

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Three persons accused of cheating many people by promising them jobs in West Asia were arrested on Tuesday. Forty of those cheated had reportedly approached the police, according to the Joint Commissioner of Police (crime), M.C. Narayanagowda.

Complaint filed

The arrest followed a complaint by Shivakumar (41) from Tumkur, an engineering graduate who was reportedly sent to Saudi Arabia on a labour visa. Shivakumar had applied for a civil engineer's post but had to work as a labourer in Riyadh from September 2004, the police said.

The names of the accused were given as A.A. Ansari, Ishaq and M.V. Ali. They were running a travel agency in Udayanagar in the K.R. Puram police station limits for the past three years. The agency was raided after a complaint from Mr. Shivakumar on Wednesday.

The police said unemployed youth were allegedly cheated of lakhs of rupees. They were promised jobs as IT (information technology) professionals, doctors, engineers, technicians and nurses in Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other countries through newspaper advertisements, according to the police.

Mr. Shivakumar could not verify details of the visa issued to him before leaving for Riyadh as it was in Arabic. He was told that it was a labour visa on his arrival in that city.

The accused deposited the money collected from job applicants in banks, Mr. Narayanagowda said. The bank accounts have been frozen, he added.

Woman attempts suicide

An elderly woman tried to set herself on fire on Vidhana Veedhi on Tuesday.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central), G.B. Chebbi, Mr. Chebbi told The Hindu that around 4.30 p.m., Sundaramba of Ulsoor doused herself in kerosene and tried to set herself on fire because the police allegedly failed to take action on her complaint that a few people were harassing her.

When Sundaramabha was pouring kerosene on herself, policemen on duty in the area took her into custody, he said. The Cubbon Park police have registered a case.

Murder accused surrenders

Asghar Ali — the main accused in the murder of Afroze Pasha, who was hacked to death in Kumaraswamy Layout police station limits on March 11 — surrendered in the 5th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Tuesday.

Abdul Rauf, another accused in the murder of Pasha, died on Monday while in the custody of the Jayanagar police. Eleven persons, including two women, were accused in the murder case. The police have arrested eight of them.

Asghar Ali was a rival of Syed Nasru, who was shot dead by the Central Crime Branch police in an encounter in Anekal in the early hours of Saturday. Earlier, he was a member of the Nasru gang, the police said.
