This Day That Age
Master Tara Singh, President of the Shiromani Akali Dal, and ten others were arrested at Amritsar on May 10 for defying the ban imposed on Punjabi Suba slogans. The arrested persons came in three batches. They were taken into custody as they came out of the precincts of the Golden Temple, shouting slogans, "Punjabi Suba Zindabad" and "Punjabi Suba ban ke rehega" (Punjabi Suba must come into being). Over fifteen thousand people, mostly Sikhs, thronged the Golden Temple to witness Master Tara Singh court arrest. The Akalis shouted slogans and peacefully went into the police vans waiting for them. Some among the crowd were also heard shouting slogans of the Punjabi Suba.
