dated May 12, 1955: UK election results

An electronic calculating machine will be used by the British Broadcasting Corporation to give the results of the British general election on May 26, reliable sources stated in London on May 11. Given the name of "Deuce," the machine will be one of the most powerful in the world. Its electronic "brain" will be "fed" in advance with all the facts and statistics about the elections, and it is expected to predict the final result of the polls as early as 11 p.m. (GMT) on May 26. It will not be able to leave its laboratory at Stafford, in Midlands, but will be directly linked with the BBC Studios by cables. Professor Maurice Campbell, Professor of Statistics at London University, will supervise the functioning of "Deuce," which can be "fed" with 2,100 facts per minute. Before "going into politics," the machine had done atomic and aeronautical research work for the Government.
