Letters to the Editor
The editorial `Commemorating a great victory' (May 10), on the one hand, sheds light on the forgotten heroes of World War II, and, on the other, tries to discount the struggle by the Wes. Although it is true that the Hollywood movies have glorified the Western heroes out of proportion and the part the Russian Army played in fighting off the Nazis remains forgotten, is it not incorrect to question whose sacrifice was bigger? What matters is that the war reached an end and the world learned a very bitter lesson on the effects of a global war. While commemorating the victory, it is better to look for methods to achieve peace and avoid another devastating war.
Sudhamshu Hebbar,
Words can never describe what the Soviet Union (primarily the Baltic states, Russia, Ukraine and Belarus) went through during the Nazi invasion. However, it would be wrong to say that it was the bravery of the Russians alone that defeated the Wehrmacht. The Nazis chose the wrong time to attack Russia during the infamous Russian winter. It was a hastily made plan. True, Winston Churchill did say that the victory against Nazi Germany would not have been possible but for the Soviets. But an unbiased analysis would make things clear.
Shyam Kumar Mangayil,
