NEW DELHI: The Air Force lost its fourth aircraft this year when a Jaguar fighter plane crashed in Basti district in Uttar Pradesh early on Wednesday, killing pilot Amit Singh, 25. It lost contact minutes after taking off from the Gorakhpur air base, said an IAF officer. Three women working on fields sustained minor injuries. The officer attributed the preliminary cause to a technical defect. A court of inquiry has been ordered. The Anglo-French Jaguars have a relatively accident-free record. Only four planes have crashed, including a mid-air collision, since their induction in the late 1970s. The Air Force is carrying out mid-life upgrades with advanced avionics and improved radars but it is not clear whether the plane, which crashed, is an updated version.
