Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: Railway Minister Lalu Prasad met Prime Minister Mamohan Singh here a day after the latter defended the Election Commission as a national institution and said that constitutional bodies should be respected. Mr. Prasad's calling on the Prime Minster along with his party MPs was being seen as an attempt to clarify his position. Mr. Prasad, it is understood, apprised the Prime Minister that the statement made by him was a reiteration of the charges levelled by senior bureaucrat, L.V. Saptarishi, and not his own.
Not attacking Poll Commission
The Railway Minister told correspondents later that while he did not attack the Election Commission, he was sticking to his stand that the two Commissioners, B.B. Tandon and N. Gopalaswamy, should resign. Mr. Prasad said that he wanted to meet Dr. Singh after the latter's return from Moscow. The meeting assumes significance in the wake of the Prime Minister's stand that nothing should be done that could weaken the country's democratic fabric. He had said that persons outside and inside the constitutional bodies should respect their sanctity and maintain their autonomy.
