Imphal doctors go on strike to protest kidnap

A Correspondent

IMPHAL: Hospital work in the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) here has been disrupted since Wednesday morning as teachers and doctors went on strike in protest against the abduction of Dr. Yumnam Nandbir by militants of the Human Rights Protection Guild. They are demanding a ransom for Rs. 30 lakhs. Emergency and out-patient departments were immediately closed. All doctors and non-teaching staff launched a sit-in protest from 10 a.m.

Talking to The Hindu, Director L. Fimate, who joined the protest, said there was no question of paying such a huge ransom.

The police have launched a manhunt to rescue the doctor.
