City advocate recalls Scottish experience

Special Correspondent

Working with Dundee Citizens Advice Bureau a `memorable experience'

CHENNAI.: K. Vijaya Kumar, a city advocate, went to Scotland in December to see his daughter who is studying biotechnology at the University of Abertay. He ended up spending time at the Dundee Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), a voluntary agency that assists citizens in desperate circumstances.

Today, he is the a proud owner of a commendation letter from the agency for voluntary work he did for three months. It specifically recalls his competence in keeping detailed case records, and helping people with problems over getting welfare benefits, housing, consumer, debt, employment, family and relationships.

"It was a memorable experience ... I hope to repeat the work if I can," says Mr. Vijaya Kumar, as he holds up four albums of photographs -- all records of his work at Dundee. He now wants to replicate the model here, if he can.

It all started rather innocently. His daughter's phone card did not work. "She hardly bothered about it, but I wanted to make it an issue. I enquired with people around and was directed to the CAB. It took two attempts and in the second, I was received well and given a sympathetic ear.

``The volunteer made some calls, and within minutes we got the money back. I got curious and enlisted there as a volunteer," he says. For three months, he worked there as a volunteer.

A letter from Mary Kinninmonth, manager of Dundee CAB, in a commendation letter notes that as a qualified solicitor from India, Krishnan (his first name) obviously has a good grasp of legal issues and so could take up voluntary work in the Bureau.
