Telemedicine facility opened in Pondicherry General Hospital

Staff Reporter

Cath lab meant for angioplasty to be inaugurated soon, says Health Minister

PONDICHERRY: The Health Minister, E. Valsaraj, today said that the Pondicherry General Hospital would soon have facilities for performing angioplasty on patients with blocks in the heart.

Speaking after launching the telemedicine facility that would link the Government General Hospitals of Mahe, Yanam, Karaikal and Pondicherry with other hospitals, Mr Valsaraj said that the Cath lab meant for angioplasty would soon be opened.

"If all goes well, the hospital would also have a kidney transplantation facility. Already a team of experts from Delhi have visited the hospital and checked it for the infrastructure needed", he added.

The Minister said that the General hospital would soon be renamed as the Indira Gandhi Post Graduate Institute and General Hospital. "We already run a DNB course and will soon have a senior residency programme. When the Government medical college comes up next year, it would be attached to this hospital. Already we have identified 25 acres of land meant for the college.

We would request the Central Government to waive some conditions so that we can open the college quickly", he further said.

Dr Dileep Kumar Baliga, Medical Superintendent, said that with the launch of the telemedicine facility, doctors and patients need not move to other hospitals for referral and can instead consult with experts, while remaining at the base hospital itself.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) under its health care programme has provided the base unit, antenna and modems at free of cost, he said.

The Information Technology Director, Prithviraj said the telemedicine facility would be upgraded once the Pondicherry State Wide Area Network (PSWAN) was launched in 6 - 10 months.

"We would link all the Government departments and even primary health care centres through PSWAN. Already the necessary satellite network has been put in place. All that we need is the multiple conferencing units, then multicast would be possible", he added.
