Beyond controversies: `Shikara kalashas' being installed on the newly constructed Kanaka Gopura on the Sri Krishna Temple premises in Udupi on Wednesday.
UDUPI: The newly built "Kanaka Gopura" was offered to Lord Krishna at the "samarpana" ceremony held here on Wednesday morning. Elaborate religious rituals marked the ceremony. The "utsava murthy" of Lord Krishna was taken in a golden chariot along Car Street at 8.55 a.m. After reaching the Kanaka Gopura on the temple premises, the idol was taken to the "Kanakana Kindi," where the "shikara kalashas" were kept. The finale of the ceremony involved placing the "shikara kalashas" atop the Kanaka Gopura. Sri Vishwapriya Tirtha Swamiji of the Paryaya Sri Admar Mutt climbed the Kanaka Gopura and placed the "shikara kalashas" on it after performing rituals. The rituals were completed by 9.30 a.m. The MLA and president of the Udupi district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, K. Raghupati Bhat; the MLC V.S. Acharya; the former president of Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Harikrishna Punaroor; and the president of Dakshina Kannada District Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, were present. On Tuesday night, rituals such as "vastu bali," "vastu homa" and "rakshogna homa" were performed. However, there was no formal inauguration of the Kanaka Gopura.
Dismantled
The construction of the new gopura was taken up on August 19 2004, after the old one was dismantled. The old gopura was said to have been constructed by late Sri Vidyapurna Tirtha Swamiji of the Sri Krishnapur Mutt in 1910-1912. The dismantling of the old gopura last year had raised a controversy. The leaders of the Kuruba community felt that they had not been consulted on the issue and that dismantling the gopura was an insult to the saint-composer, Kanakadasa, as the gopura was located above the Kanakana kindi (Kanaka's window), through which the devotees had darshan of Lord Krishna before they entered the temple. The construction of the new Kanaka Gopura was taken up by Sri Vishwapriya Tirtha Swamiji as part of his "paryaya" programme.
