HYDERABAD: The Technical Education Minister, N. Narasimha Reddy, and two CPI MLAs have suggested to the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, to increase the diameter of the SLBC tunnel from 9.2 m to 13 m to discharge about 8,000 cusecs. In a representation submitted to the Chief Minister along with the CPI lMLAs -- P. Venkata Reddy and Ravindra Kumar -- here on Wednesday, the Minister said it was necessary to increase the tunnel size in order to do justice to Nalgonda farmers. The present design allows discharge of 4,000 cusecs within 90 days to draw 30 tmc with 9.2 m diameter. The representation said: "It would be a discrimination towards Nalgonda farmers if the flood flow of 45 days are not considered on a par with the Telugu Ganga design conditions. Thus, with 4,000 cusecs half of the ayacut would not get water and if envisaged ayacut of three lakh acres under the scheme is not served. Mr. Reddy said without the head regulator the construction of tunnel would be a waste. Hence, head regulator with increased size of 13 m dia tunnel might be incorporated in the tender notice. The date of receipt of tenders might be extended by another 15 days in order receive tenders for the construction of the tunnel with modified specifications.
