IAAF course ends

Special Correspondent

Chennai: The five-day IAAF Level I course for technical officials — the first of its kind in India — concluded on Wednesday evening at the JN Stadium. Peter Solomon, member, Technical Committee, International Associations of Athletics Federation (IAAF), from Malaysia observed that the course, attended by 23 officials from different parts of India, was the first to be held under the updated syllabus drawn by IAAF.

He also informed the audience that the IAAF would deal with as many as 200 proposed rule changes during the Congress to be held during the World Championships at Helsinki. He termed the Chennai course as "historic."

Speakers headed by Waltar I. Davaram, President, Tamil Nadu Athletics Association and Vice-President, Sports Development Authority of India, emphasised the value of the course in view of the Commonwealth Games to be conducted in New Delhi in 2010.

P.W.C. Davidar, Member Secretary, SDAT, underscored the commitment of Tamil Nadu to play host to a seminar or course in any Olympic disciplines.

Jagan M. Seshadri, ADGP, pointed out the role of officials in crunch situations when the right interpretation of rules became mandatory. He hailed the role of Tamil Nadu in organising sports events in various disciplines.

To build large base

Satish Pillai of Kerala, member of the AFI technical committee, said the course was aimed at building up a large base of officials for the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

Davaram presented the certificates for the officials in the presence of C. Sylendra Babu, President, Kanchipuram Distirct Athletics Association, and Joint Commissioner of Police (Chennai North).

Eswar Rao, Treasurer, TNAA, welcomed the gathering. C.K. Valson, the only Level III official in India, proposed a vote of thanks.
