India routs USA in second match

BEIJING: Indian trounced USA 4-1 in its second Group 3B league encounter in the Sudirman Cup world team badminton championships here on Wednesday.

The Indians, who thrashed Wales 4-1 in the opening tie on Tuesday, would now take on Scotland in its final league encounter tomorrow and is the favourite to top this sub-group.

The winner of the two sub-groups (3A and 3B) would meet each other in a play-off to decide which team is promoted to Group 2 in the next edition of the event.

Indian began well as the mixed doubles pair of V. Diju and Jwala Gutta got the better of T. Gunawan and M. Mesinee 15-4, 12-15, 15-7 in 41 minutes.

Arvind Bhat doubled the lead when he defeated Raju Rai in straight games 15-13, 15-13. Trupti Murgunde thrashed Eva Lee 11-4, 11-1 in just 22 minutes to give India an unassailable 3-0 lead.

USA reduced the margin when H. Bach and Malythong defeated Sanave Thomas and Rupesh Kumar 17-14, 15-11 in the men's doubles.

But Gutta then teamed up with Shruti Kurien to beat Lee and Mesinee 15-10, 15-6 to complete the 4-1 win.

China in last four

Meanwhile, China, South Korea, Denmark and Indonesia booked their berths in the semifinals on Wednesday.

Host China demolished Hong Kong 5-0, while Indonesia beat Sweden 4-1 in the other Group 1B match.

Defending champion South Korea romped to an easy 5-0 win over England in Group 1A, while Denmark saw off Thailand 4-1 to bag their spot in the last four.

South Korea's mn's pair Ha Tae-kwon and Yim Bang-eun edged past Anthony Clark and Robert Blair in a long, dramatic match that ended 15-17, 15-13, 15-5.

World champion Ra Kyung-min and her partner Lee Jae-Jin managed to seal the sweep with a 2-1 victory over All England winners Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms in the mixed doubles.

Women's duo of Lee Kyung-won and Lee Hyo-jung played Korea's fastest match of the day, disposing of Ella Tripp and Joanne Wright 2-0. The Danes came back from one game down in two matches on the way to a 4-1 victory over Thailand. — Agencies
