60 houses destroyed in fire accident

KURNOOL: In a major fire accident at Chityala village in Krishnagiri mandal of Kurnool district on Wednesday, 60 houses were destroyed. Farmers suffered heavy loss as bags of groundnut were completely damaged. The loss was estimated at Rs. 50 lakhs.

According to reports, the sparks caused by contact of electric wires caused the fire. Most of the victims were backward class farmers. Two hundred fowls also perished in the fire. __Staff Reporter

Minimum wages for contract employees

HYDERABADTIRUPATI.HYDERABADADILABADVIZIA: The Director of Municipal Administration has issued instructions to pay minimum wages to contract municipal employees, issue PF cards and stipulate educational qualifications for promotion of permanent sanitation staff. This was stated in a press release by the Andhra Pradesh Municipal Workers' and Employees' Union here on Wednesday.

K. Venkateswarlu, president, said members of the union had laid a siege to the director's office on May 5 to press the demands. __ Staff Reporter

30 take ill due to food poisoning

HYDERABADTIRUPATI.HYDERABADADILABADVIZIA: Over 30 persons, including twenty children took ill on Wednesday after they reportedly consumed the stale food cooked the

previous day. While four women and 16 children have been admitted to the Sri Venkateswara Ramnarain Ruia General Hospital after they developed nausea, ten others were said to have been rushed to the nearby private hospitals. __Staff Reporter

Two ITC plants in State get awards

HYDERABADTIRUPATI.HYDERABADADILABADVIZIA: The ITC plants at Anaparthy and Chirala in the State along with those in Bangalore, Kolkata and Sahranpur were presented with gold awards of the New Delhi-based voluntary body, Greentech Foundation for safety and security in manufacturing.

The Foundation gave away awards to various companies in the areas of occupational health, fire, safety and security at its fourth annual international conference and exhibition that began here on Wednesday. Shriram Alkalies and Chemical plant at Baruch in Gujarat won the top honours.__ Staff Reporter

Ganja worth Rs. 1 crore seized

HYDERABADTIRUPATI.HYDERABADADILABADVIZIA: The Adilabad town police on Wednesday seized 1.6 tonnes of dry ganja, valued at over Rs. 1 crore, from an Uttar Pradesh-bound van. The driver of the van in which a mango consignment was used to camouflage the ganja (in 72 gunny bags) was arrested.

The interrogation of the driver revealed that the ganja was loaded at Sileru in Visakhapatnam to handed over to one Yogesh on the outskirts of Benaras in UP. The ganja was to be transported further up to Gorakhpur near the border of Nepal. The contraband was loaded allegedly at the behest of Ramana and Sattibabu of Sileru.

Two killed in wall collapse

HYDERABADTIRUPATI.HYDERABADADILABADVIZIA: Two woman construction workers, N. Ramanamma, 30, and N. Appayamma, 45, were killed when an unsupported wall on the first floor of a private school building fell on them. They were taking shelter behind the wall when strong gales accompanied by rain lashed the town on Tuesday evening, according to the II Town police. The CITU secretary, M. Srinivas, asked the school management to pay Rs.2 lakhs each to the victims families.__Our Correspondent,

Man electrocuted

HYDERABADTIRUPATI.HYDERABADADILABADVIZIA: Sathaiah, 35, a casual labourer working for a Transco, died on Tuesday night when he came into contact with a live high tension wire in the Pashamailaram industrial area. The deceased is a native of Konyala village in Hathnoor mandal. The mishap occurred when a few labourers were trying to untangle a low lying power line from a tree below the HT line, Sathaiah died on the spot. Paddy, cotton destroyed in fire

HYDERABADTIRUPATI.HYDERABADADILABADVIZIA: Four fire mishaps in different parts of the district have caused a loss of Rs.30,000 besides damage to paddy and cotton.

At Mutyalapadu village of Chillakur mandal, a thatched house was destroyed, whereas in Anjaneyapuram of Rapur mandal, a thatched house caught fire due to snapping of electric wires recently. As many as 13 bags of rice and 10 bags of cotton were also destroyed. At Kodandaramapuram village of Butchireddipalem mandal, a house was completely burnt due to electric short circuit and in Veerareddipalem of Kaligiri mandal, two haystacks caught fire, due to electric short circuit. __Staff Reporter

House burgled

HYDERABADTIRUPATI.HYDERABADADILABADVIZIA: A residential house in Toorpu street of Venkatagiri town of Nellore district, was burgled by unknown persons, resulting in theft of ornaments valued at Rs. 50,000 on Tuesday. According to the complaint lodged with the police, the accused gained entry into the house from the rear side. The CLUES team visited the scene of offence and further investigation is on. - Staff Reporter

Compensation for ryots

HYDERABADTIRUPATI.HYDERABADADILABADVIZIA: A sum of Rs. 2.20 lakhs has been sanctioned from the Calamity Relief Fund towards compensation for horticulture farmers, who have suffered crop losses due to gales and hailstorms in March this year, the Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, said on Wednesday.

Farmers incurring loss of banana, papaya, betel leaf, watermelon, sunflower and mustard would be disbursed compensation, he said. _- Staff Reporter

Ex gratia sanctioned

statement.

Workshop on Hindi use gets under way

NIZAMABAD: The three-day workshop on the use of Hindi in the offices of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) got under way here on Wednesday. Inaugurating the Hindi Karyasala, (workshop) the BSNL district general manager, A. Ganapathi Ram, said the workshop would be useful for employees to fulfil the targets given by the Government for implementing the language in their offices. A senior officer (Hindi language), B. Dinakar, said the workshop was intended to dispel inhibition among employees in using the language. The BSNL Deputy GM, B. Subba Rao, appealed to the employees to take part in the programme in a big way.

DIG distributes mementoes

Sangareddy: The Nizamabad range DIG, Anjani Kumar, distributed mementoes to the children of policemen who achieved the highest marks in the SSC and Intermediate examination here on Wednesday. Phani Kumar, son of Kameswar Rao, a communication expert of Medak police, who scored 99 per cent in first year Intermediate, was among those who were felicitated by the DIG. The DIG and the Medak SP, B.L.Sujatha Rao, later honoured Buchiram Reddy, Additional SP, Operations, who is leaving on promotion to Hyderabad.

1,049 panchayats covered during Praja Patham

KURNOOL: The Collector, Vikas Raj, has said under the Praja Patham 1,049 gram pachayats and wards have been covered during the month-long programme. Talking to reporters here on Wednesday, he said the MLAs covered 80 per cent of habitations.

Meanwhile, the Collector asked the agriculture and horticulture officers to prepare plans for taking up orchards on 15,000 hectares this year. The Government would meet 75 per cent of the cost of planting material and pits preparation. - Staff Repoter
