BENeFiTS FOR PEOPLE: Social Welfare Minister D.S.Redya Naik distributing assets to beneficiaries at the `Runa Mela' held at Maripeda in Warangal district on Wednesday.
MARIPEDA (WARANGAL DT): Some 15,000 people turned up for what looked like a grand village fair to take part in the `Runa Mela' where more than 12,000 poor people were given away benefits under various welfare schemes by the Social Welfare Minister, D S Redya Naik. Commemorating the completion of one year in office by the Congress Government and concluding day of the Praja Patham programme, the district administration extended benefits such as subsidy, distribution of sewing machines, old age pension, national family benefit scheme, Apathbandhu, ex gratia to the families of farmers who committed suicide, loans through BC/SC and Minority corporations and distribution of house site pattas - all worth over Rs 5 crores.
Large turnout
People in large numbers from different mandals of Dornakal Assembly constituency turned up for the event. Hundreds of women and children sat through the function, which lasted for more than five hours, braving the scorching sun without any flutter. As Mr. Redya Naik listed the initiatives of the Congress party ever since it assumed power one year ago in the State, the people applauded him. "This is not the Government of words, but actions,'' he said as the crowd cheered. The Minister accused the TDP leaders of trying to create hurdles for the ongoing irrigation projects by raking up unnecessary issues. They were unable to stomach the growing public image of the Government.
Performance compared
"People know better who is doing what. Had the TDP Government delivered its promises, people would have elected them again. Unlike the TDP, the Congress party is delivering all its election promises without much publicity,'' he pointed out. District Collector N Siva Sankar, project directors Ch Sridhar (DRDA) and Krishna Reddy (SC Corporation), Mahabubabad Revenue Divisional Officer, K Damodar Reddy, DCC president G V Ramana Reddy and several others were present.
