BANGALORE: The festive atmosphere in the office of the Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), M.C. Narayana Gowda, was not because it was Akshaya Trittiya or Basava Jayanti. Nor was it because of the celebration of the Engineers Day. Mr. Narayana Gowda was hosting an inter-caste marriage for a girl and youth who approached him on Wednesday. When Raghunath Reddy (28) of Bellary, who works with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd., and his fianceé, Savita (24) of Doddaballapur, approached Mr. Narayana Gowda this morning, they did not know they would emerge out of his office as husband and wife. Acting fast, Mr. Narayana Gowda called the parents of Raghunath Reddy, a Lingayat, and Savita, a Maratha girl. Savita's parents, who are opposed to the marriage, did not come. Savita said since she was a major she should have a say in her marriage. Mr. Narayana Gowda agreed. Soon garlands and sweets arrived. The couple exchanged the garlands as Raghunath Reddy's parents and Savita's friends applauded. Distribution of sweets followed. Mr. Narayana Gowda was happy that the marriage took place on Basava Jayanti.
