Three killed in accident

NEW DELHI: Three persons were killed when a moving bus overturned after hitting the central verge at Kotwali area in North Delhi district here on Wednesday. Two others were injured.

The bus, plying between Inter State Bus Terminal and Uttam Nagar, was carrying close to 20 passengers. At Kotwali area, the bus hit the central verge and overturned. According to the police, the accident occurred due to negligent driving and over speeding. The driver, however, escaped from the spot.

The victims were rushed to hospital. One of the dead has been identified as 45-year-old Mohammad Ahmed. The other two, however, still remain unidentified.

A case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving has been registered at Kotwali police station.

Fire in tyre godown

NEW DELHI: A fire broke out in a tyre godown at Sangam Vihar in North District on Wednesday. Fire-fighting operations were on till late in the night.

According to the fire department officials, the fire broke out at around 9-30 in the evening. At least 16 fire-tenders were pressed into service.

Fire department officials claimed that since the incident occurred in an open area, there were no casualties.

English course

NEW DELHI: The United States Embassy here on Wednesday presented certificates to 70 students of Jamia Senior Secondary School who recently joined a two-year English language course, ACCESS, funded by the US government.

The certificates were given away by the U.S. Embassy Charge d' Afffaires, Robert O. Blake.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Blake underscored the growing importance of the language in the fast-expanding global market and reiterated his support for providing more educational opportunities to the Indian youth.

The programme, launched in Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai last year, identifies the youth of modest income families and provides free English education.

It is supported by the US State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Telephone exchange

NEW DELHI : A new state-of-the-art telephone exchange has been commissioned at Netaji Subhash Place in North-West Delhi and will serve areas, including Netaji Subhash Place, Lok Vihar, Kohat Enclave, Vasudha Enclave and Rohit Kunj. This has led to change in around 700 telephone numbers working from the exchange from code 2710, 2715, 2718 and 2719 to the new code 2735.

All affected subscribers are required to re-register their dynamic code and reactivate the phone plus facilities. In case of any difficulty, subscribers can contact on phone numbers - 27351200 and 27102324.

One wounded

NEW DELHI : A man was shot in North-West Delhi on Wednesday by identified persons and was in a serious condition, police sources said.

Hari (30), who worked in a cow-shed, was shot in the stomach in Bawana in the morning.

Investigations were on to trace the attackers, the sources said.
