NEW DELHI: : The Lieutenant-Governor of Delhi, B.L. Joshi, inaugurated the Electronic Area Security System at Karol Bagh police station in Central Delhi on Wednesday that seeks to check property offences like theft and robbery in the commercial area through round-the-clock surveillance with the help of 28 video cameras. This scheme would cover two lakh people living in the area and about two lakh visitors, traders and employees in the bustling market. Inaugurating the unique system, which has been launched for the first time in Delhi, Mr Joshi said the police-public cooperation being shown in Karol Bagh was worth emulating in other parts of Delhi. Stating that he had witnessed the police management in various other countries, he lauded the introduction of new and innovative system started by Delhi Police. He said the police is required to continuously upgrade and modernize for effective prevention and investigation of crime. The Commissioner of Delhi police, K.K. Paul, said the police-community relation in Karol Bagh has always been good due to the hand of cooperation extended by the trade association. Launching of the system, he said would help keep a watch on crowd movements, in controlling traffic and keeping a vigil on the activities of anti-social elements. At a later stage, he said, the system would also be implemented in other parts of the Capital. It was pointed out that due to the highly commercialised character of Karol Bagh the volume of cash transactions there is also very high. And as in such circumstances there is always a possibility of property offences taking place in the area, Delhi Police has launched the Area Security System based on 24-hour electronic surveillance to reduce the risk of property offences. Under the system, 28 closed circuit television cameras have been installed at various locations in the Karol Bagh Market area. These cameras have variable focus with some of them having the capacity to rotate at 360 degree and to zoom in. The Control Room to monitor the CCTV system has been set up at Karol Bagh police station while monitors have also been installed in the offices of Assistant Commissioner of Police and Station House Officer of Karol Bagh. The police said all the points covered by CCTV cameras have 12 public address systems with 52 speakers put up at various points. This public address system will be utilized to activate the area security system if any incident takes place. The police pickets, patrolling motorcycles, Police Control Room vans and foot-patrolling parties of Karol Bagh, Prasad Nagar, Rajender Nagar and D.B.G. Road police station will also be activated in case of any incident through this public address system as well as through wireless message by the control room in-charge of the Area Security System. Moreover, the general public can also be instructed with the help of the system in case of any contingency.
