Staff Reporter

70 patients have been discharged from hospitals

NEW DELHI: The outbreak of a virulent strain of meningitis in Delhi claimed another life in the Capital taking the toll to 18 even as 36 new cases were reported raising the number of patients to 250.

One death was reported from the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) where a 90-year-old woman died in the past 24 hours. Another previously unconfirmed death of a 22-year-old Joginder from Azadpur at LNJP Hospital on Monday was today confirmed. Seventy patients have been discharged from various hospitals in the Capital so far.

Speaking about the number of cases coming in from various parts of the city, the Director (Hospital Administration), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), J. N. Banavaliker, said: "We cannot stress more on the fact that early diagnosis and medical treatment is the best way out for patients besides avoiding crowded areas and maintaining good hygiene. Cases continue to come in from the Walled City, Sardar Paharganj, Civil Lines and Shahdra North which still are listed as sensitive zones.''

Hospitals in the Capital which have the largest number of patients include LNPJ (78), Hindu Rao (29), AIIMS (12), RML (10) and Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital (9).

At a high level meeting attended by medical superintendents of Delhi hospitals, senior government officials reviewed the various strategies adopted to combat the disease and maintained that they were going in the right direction.

"Vaccines are available and should be used by those at risk. The number of cases coming in continues to be high but we are hopeful that it will come down soon. We are happy with the fact that Delhi does not have a large number of children and women patients but we also need to keep in mind the fact that the disease afflicts adolescent children,'' said the Head of Department, Paediatrics, LNJP, A.P. Dubey.
