LONDON: British Prime Minister Tony Blair has rejected calls from dissident party MPs to step down saying that he wants time to ensure a "stable and orderly'' transition. At a reportedly tense and heated meeting of newly-elected Labour MPs, Mr. Blair faced down his critics who told him that he had become an electoral liability and should step down without further ado. While reiterating his promise to stand down before the next general election, Mr. Blair made clear that he would go at a time of his own choosing and would not be hustled into it. "Our fourth victory will be under different leadership but we have to remain united until then,'' Mr. Blair said adding: "I want a stable and orderly transition, and please allow me to ensure that happens.'' His remarks followed renewed demand for him to leave at the earliest, preferably before next year's local elections. "I told him you have got to go before the local elections. But the Prime Minister does not believe he is unpopular. He is in denial,'' said Bob Marshall-Andrews, a senior party backbencher. Another MP reportedly told Mr. Blair that if the party did not have a new leader soon enough, it would lose the local elections.
