Spirit of 1857

This refers to the write-up, `The spirit of 1857' by Subramanian Swamy (May 11). May 10, 1857 was when Mangal Pandey, an Indian sepoy from Meerut, shot dead an English officer. It was the culmination of the national upsurge that started in the South when Alagumuthukon in 1739, Kattabomman in 1799 and Chinna Maruthu in 1801 were executed by the British for their role in the freedom movement. The author has rightly remarked, "... the popular uprising fired the imagination of the nation."

Dr. Swamy has done well to highlight the importance of V.D. Savarkar's The Indian War of Independence: 1857. A search for the book in Amazon.com yields just one used book (hardcover, Phoenix Pub., Bombay, 1947) for $75 available from a used-book dealer in Wisconsin, U.S.

The search also reveals that the first edition, published in the U.K. in 1909, was immediately banned and destroyed by the British.
