dated May 13, 1955: Pak. warns Afghanistan

Pakistan's Minister for the Interior, Major General Iskander Mirza, gave a stern warning to Afghanistan that Pakistan will fight for the maintenance of the Durand Line as the Pakistan-Afghanistan boundary. Deploring the "offensive" attitude adopted by the Royal Afghan Government, he advised Kabul against adopting a course which might compel Pakistan to draw the sword in self-defence. In a statement issued in Karachi on May 11, Gen. Iskander Mirza said that during his recent tour of the North-West Frontier Province and Baluchistan he had detailed talks with military officers and political agents regarding the problems created by Afghan animosity and aggressive designs against Pakistan. He said he returned satisfied that "our border problems are in safe hands and we can look forward to meeting any emergency with confidence and optimism. A great deal has come out recently about the so-called Afghan mobilisation. To call up certain age groups by radio broadcast in a country where radios are few and far between is peculiar. Perhaps, it was to impress Pakistan. If so, I would like to ask our Afghan friends whether they really think that such sabre-rattling and offensive attitude is going to help them." Mobilisation is generally a prelude to war, said Gen. Iskander Mirza and added, "Are the rulers of Afghanistan so mad as to contemplate an attack on us?"
