P. S. Suryanarayana
SINGAPORE: Pakistan Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has ruled out placing trade above politics in his country's relationship with India. Citing the "history of trust deficit" in Pakistan's equation with India, Mr. Aziz said in Singapore on Wednesday that "progress on trade and investment will move in tandem with progress on settlement of other issues". Responding to questions at a meeting with the Singapore Press Club, Mr. Aziz even downplayed the significance of an economic dividend that could accrue to Pakistan as a result of political détente with India. Noting that many studies had "overstated" Pakistan's economic advantages of trading with neighbouring India, he remarked that "if you have a good product at the right price, you will sell it from wherever you are" in today's milieu of globalisation.
