BANGALORE: A stake money hike of 16 per cent compared to last winter is the highlight of the 28-day Bangalore Summer Season, which kicks off on May 14 (Saturday). The total stake money outlay for the season has touched Rs. 9 crores for the 229-race season, which offers local ownership a higher incentive this season. Dr. K. Srinivasa Gowda, Chairman and Senior Steward of Bangalore Turf Club, told newsmen on Thursday afternoon that the incentives for local owners have gone up by nearly 33 per cent compared to the last time. Apart from roping in sponsorship for two events, the club has also introduced a 1,200m sweep stakes race with an added money of Rs. 3 lakhs and labelled it the Bangalore City Cup, Dr. Gowda said. One of the sponsored events is the Daisy Appu Bangalore Anniversary Cup. Dr. Gowda said that timely rains have helped the club in keeping the track in excellent condition. He said as many as 132 outstation horses have been stabled and more than 800 horses are expected to race during what he expects to be a highly competitive season. The Appeals Board has been re-constituted with Vivek Ubhayakar as Chairman. The other members of the panel are Mariswamy, Suresh Kumar Sharma, A.V.R. Char and Chokkalingam.
