Sensex gains 12 points

MUMBAI: In range-bound trading, the Sensex on Thursday improved further by 11.69 points to close at 6456.82 on renewed buying on the Bombay Stock Exchange.

The BSE 30-share sensitive index opened marginally higher at 6442.86 against 6445.13 yesterday. Thereafter, it rose sharply to an intra-day high of 6482.39, before closing at 6456.82.

Shares in small-cap and mid-cap were in keen demand and rose sharply as the BSE Small-cap rallied by 67.08 points to 4155.44 and BSE Mid-cap by 31.84 points to 3198.36.

Sentiment was boosted by firm global advices and fall in international crude oil prices, a broker said.

On the Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained by 19.14 points and the Nasdaq Composite Index by 8.78 points on Wednesday. In the Asian market, the Hang Seng index firmed up by 28.48 points.

Global crude oil prices fell sharply to $49.87 a barrel in response to data showing that U.S. crude inventories had reached the highest level for three years, easing supply worries, he added.

Smart rise in select cement, auto, oil PSUs and consumer durable shares helped the index close in the positive terrain.

However, the undertone was cautious as prices met with resistance at every rise, market analysts said.

Index-based shares such as Grasim, GACL, ACC, Bajaj Auto, Maruti, Tata Motors, HPCL, ONGC, Hindalco, L&T, HDFC, Wipro, SBI, Ranbaxy, Tata Power and Zee Tele rose sharply.
