PONDICHERRY: The government maternity hospital in Pondicherry, in collaboration with a specialist in gynaecology from Apollo Hospitals, Chennai performed a recanalisation operation on seven women who lost their children in the December tsunami in Pondicherry and Karaikal. A release from the office of the Health Minister of Pondicherry E. Valsaraj said that it was part of the rehabilitation programme implemented by the Health Department to enable the women who lost their children in the tsunami to have their family planning surgery revised. Sixteen women will have their family planning operation reversed. The operations on the seven were done by Dr Sarath, a gynaecologist and consultant in Reproductive Medicine of the Chennai-based hospital. Dr. T.B. Kasturi, the Medical Superintendent of the government maternity hospital provided pre-operation counselling to the patients. The release said of the seven, six were from Karaikal and one was from Pondicherry. The services of the specialist from Apollo were provided free of cost to the couples. The patients from Karaikal were provided transport facilities free of cost.
