CHENNAI: The Minister for Fisheries, Dominic Presentation, and top Fisheries Department officials on Thursday visited Tamil Nadu's Kolathur village to study the highly successful ornamental fish cultivation by the villagers. ``We want to replicate the Kolathur model in Kochi, which is ideally suited for ornamental fish cultivation,'' Mr. Presentation said. The Minister said he also held talks with the Tamil Nadu Fisheries Department officials, who accompanied the Kerala delegation to the Kolathur village. ``I am told that an household in Kolathur earns over Rs. 5,000 per month through ornamental fish cultivation. This model can be adopted in Kerala also,'' he said. The Minister said some Kerala villagers would be trained in the ornamental fish cultivation at Kolathur village. This would also help them in getting ``practical experience'' on the ornamental fish cultivation. Mr. Presentation was accompanied by Hari Kumar, Director of Fisheries (Kerala), and A. Gopalakrishnan Nair, Executive Director, State Fisheries Resource Management Society (Firma). The Tamil Nadu Fisheries Director, Prabhakar, and the Additional Director, D.P. Yadav, also held discussions with the Kerala delegation. Mr. Presentation said the State Government was planning to organise an ornamental fish exhibition soon in Kerala for creating awareness on the potential among the people. There are about 600 families earning their livelihood through ornamental fish cultivation in the village. — PTI
