BANGALORE: Although the Congress is yet to announce its candidates for the Shimoga Lok Sabha and Chamarajpet Assembly byelections, R.V. Devaraj, party MLC, on Thursday filed his nomination papers for the Assembly seat on the expectation that he will be selected. He was accompanied by a number of supporters. The returning officer, Manu Baligar received the nomination papers. Mr. Devaraj was represented the Chamarajapet constituency in the eleventh Assembly. As the then Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, decided to contest from Chamarajpet instead of Maddur in the 2004 Assembly elections, Mr. Devaraj was given a seat in the Upper House. The byelection to the Chamarajpet seat has been necessitated by Mr. Krishna's resignation following his appointment as Governor of Maharashtra. Mr. Devaraj told The Hindu that he filed the papers on Thursday since it was an auspicious day. In the event the Congress High Command does not give him the ticket, he will withdraw his candidature, he said. "I am a disciplined soldier of the party," he added. The BJP candidate for the Chamarajpet byelection, Pramila Nesargi, is scheduled to file her nomination papers on Friday.
