MUMBAI: Bowlers called the shots on day one of the 19th The Sportstar Trophy U-19 MCA Selection trial tournament, as 27 wickets fell in two league matches at Cross Maidan on Thursday. Left-arm spinner Sandeep Deojurkar claimed four for 33, medium-pacers Rahul Vengsarkar, Balwinder Singh Sandhu and off-spinner Jeff Pereira chipped in with two wickets each for Vijay Merchant XI at the National CC ground. Vijay Manjrekar XI, bundled out for 178, struck back through seamer Jagrut Mehta (3-23) to reduce Vijay Merchant XI to 66 for three. Timely contributions from Khandu Rangnekar XI middle-order batsmen took the side to 196 against Dattu Phadkar XI at Sunder CC. The match started 45 minutes late due to a wet wicket and saw Mishel Hejmadi top score with 43 (45b, 7x4). Pratik Amin managed 36 off 83 balls. Medium-pacer Murtuza Hussain was the most successful bowler for Phadkar XI (3-24) and spinners Dhaval Parab and Siddharth Chitnis claimed two wickets each. Openers Pratap Kavadi (39 n.o.) and Srideep Mangela (35) put on 57 runs for the first wicket. Lalchand Rajput, current joint secretary of the Mumbai Cricket Association, inaugurated the tournament. The scores: Vijay Manjrekar XI 178 (Swapnil Kulye 33, Gaurang Shah 24, Nitesh Bandekar 23, Sandeep Deojurkar four for 33, Balwinder Singh Sandhu two for 21, Rahul Vengsarkar two for 28, Jeff Pereira two for 39) vs Vijay Merchant XI 66 for three (Bravish Shetty 30, Jagrut Mehta three for 23) at National CC. Khandu Rangnekar XI 196 (Mishel Hejmadi 43, Pratik Amin 36, Oninder Singh Gill 26, Salman Ahmed 27, Murtuza Hussain three for 24, Dhaval Parab two for 56, Siddharth Chitnis two for 28) vs Dattu Phadkar XI 95 for four (Srideep Mangela 35, Pratap Kavadi 39 n.o., Kartik Gangadhar two for six) at Sunder CC.
