BELLARY: Speakers at a function organised to celebrate Basava Jayanti here on Wednesday expressed concern over officials not being present and the lacklustre way it was organised. The programme was organised by the district administration and the Department of Kannada and Culture at the Basava Mantap in Basaveshwar Nagar. M.P. Prakash, Minister for Revenue and in-charge Minister of the district, was to inaugurate the function. Except G. Karunakar Reddy, MP, Sriramulu, Bellary MLA, and the Mayor, G. Somashekar Reddy, none of the elected representatives, including Mr. Prakash, Bhagirathi Marulasiddanagowda, Minister for Women and Child Development, who were among the chief guests, did not attend the programme. Similarly, none of the officials were present. Mr. Karunakar Reddy, who inaugurated the function, took exception to the absence of the officials and said it indicated the scant respect they (officials) had towards Basaveshwara. He said he would take it up with the Chief Minister. Mr. Karunakar Reddy called upon the people to follow the teaching of Basaveshwara to help lead a pious and a peaceful life. Mr. Somashekar Reddy said the municipal administration was ready to install a bronze statue of Basaveshwara but could not as the matter is before the judiciary. Mr. Sriramulu expressed surprise over the lacklustre way the programme was organised by the district administration. Compared to the other official programmes organised by the district administration, the usual pomp and gaiety was missing during Basava Jayanti. Jaji Devendrappa of the Manuscript Department, Kannada University, Hampi, delivered a special lecture on "Social values of Basavanna". Vijaya Kishore, AIR and Doordarshan artiste, rendered vachanas. Pollux Hanumanthappa accompanied her on the harmonium. Nisti Rudrappa, President of the District unit of Kannada Sahitya Parishat, proposed a vote of thanks.
