Pressing a demand: Pinarayi Vijayan, State secretary of the CPI(M), inaugurating the Secretariat march organised by the district committee of the party on Thursday. Photo: C. Ratheesh Kumar
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPI(M) State secretary, Pinarayi Vijayan, has accused the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, of preventing the police from fully investigating the SSLC question paper leak case. Inaugurating a Secretariat march organised by the CPI(M) district committee here on Thursday demanding the resignation of the Education Minister, E.T. Mohammed Basheer, in the wake of the SSLC question paper leak, Mr. Vijayan said the Chief Minister seemed to be worried that a thorough investigation would show his certain associates and the Government in bad light. A top police official, acting on the direction of the Government, had prevented the investigation team from arresting a key accused in the case, Mr. Pinarayi alleged. He said the Chief Minister should desist from interfering unnecessarily in the police investigation.
Corruption alleged
He said the quotation for printing the SSLC question papers was given to a person who did not even own a press in his name. The Government had not bothered to verify the claims of the person before entrusting him with the highly sensitive task of printing SSLC question papers in total secrecy. The Government had cheated more than five lakh students who appeared for the SSLC examinations and their families. "The SSLC muddle reeks of corruption and favouritism," he said.
Judicial probe sought
Mr. Vijayan said the CPM was demanding a judicial probe into the matter to ensure that students, who prepare honestly for examinations, were not defrauded in future. The Government had done nothing to remedy the lax situation in the Education Department that had resulted in the SSLC examination fiasco. Mr. Basheer should resign taking moral responsibility for the muddle. The CPI(M) leader said that the United Democratic Front had ceased to exist in its original form. The strongest faction in the Congress had left the party to form a separate unit. The UDF was clinging on to power despite being rejected by the people in the recent Lok Sabha elections. The CPI (M) district secretary, M. Vijayakumar, Kadakampally Surendran, former MLA, and the district panchayat president, Anavoor Nagappan, were among those present. Nearly 5,000 CPI(M) activists took part in the march that started from Asan Square and ended in front of the Secretariat.
