She has a `dream', and turns a preacher

Listeners are charmed with her knowledge and style of narration

GONDAL: Eleven-year old Varsha Nagar, a resident of a small village in Madhya Pradesh, is drawing crowds at Gondal in Gujarat to her "religious'' discourses. She preaches from the Bhagwad Gita, Quran and also from the Bible. Varsha narrates verses from the holy books, which have messages on peace and brotherhood.

She not only reads the verses, but also explains their importance in our daily lives. Her recitations include messages on humanity, promotion of culture and tradition, communal harmony, peace and brotherhood.

Varsha, a high caste Hindu Brahmin by birth, is a popular preacher at all religious gatherings at Gondal town in Gujarat, which witnessed riots in 2002.

Varsha's listeners include many Muslims. They are charmed with her knowledge and style of narration and are pleasantly surprised to see that her ``katha'' programmes include talks on communal harmony.

``This small girl preaches from the Bhagwat Gita, Bible and Quran. It is a very good thing for communal harmony,'' said Nooruddin Kapasi.

Varsha does not posses any formal education. She also does not use a prepared text for her recitals. She says that she got a message in her dreams three years ago, to conduct ``Bhagwat Katha''. Her aim is to encourage people to get on with life despite obstacles.

However, Varsha's ultimate desire is to conduct `katha' in jails as a step for prison reforms.
